About this sword :   This is an outstanding tanto by Hori Toshihide. This is a utsushi of Koto that aims at Awataguchi Kuniyoshi with wonderful results. A top tier example in every way. Ranked at 2.8 million yen in the Toko Taikan and listed in Fujishiro's Shinto-hen.

Toshihide was born in Shimosaka in 1886. In 1905 he became a pupil of Hori Taneaki (a student of Takai Naotane). The early works of Toshihide were signed Hideaki. Hideaki was the name that was given to him by the NTHK in 1913. He changed his name to Toshihide in 1933 out of respect for the birth of emperor Akihito. Toshihide passed away in 1943. This Tanto was a special order and made when Toshihide was 52 years old. The mei records that this was custom ordered for Kunizo Hara. Kunizo Hara was president of the Dai Hyaku (The 100th) Bank and president of the Aikoku Life Insurance Company. Also served as governor of the Metropolitan High-Speed Transportation Corporation, an executive officer of the Tobu Railway Company, the Japan Air Transportation Company, the Dai Nippon Airplane Company, and Japan Air Lines. Kunizo Hara was quite famous as a successful businessman and patron of the arts. He donated his home in Tokyo to the public and it became the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art that is still operating today. He passed away on March 30, 1958 at the age of 74. The accompanying koshirae features the Nambu kamon (Chinese flower) in perfect condtion. An exciting opportunity to own a top tier gendai-to tanto by Hori Toshihide.
