Hamon :   Nioi-deki, wide suguha with choji. The nioi-guchi is soft and there are many ashi.

Boshi :  Ko-maru with a short return. Hakikake can be seen in the kaeri on both sides.

Kitae :  Ko-itame hada. Bo-utsuri can be seen above the hamon along the entire length of the blade, on both sides, showing the smith's control of the tempering.

About this sword :   This is a tachi by one of the top Gendai smiths, Takahashi Yoshimune. Born in 1897, he was the older brother of Takahashi Sadatsugu (The first Ningen Kokuho) and was from Ehime Prefecture. In 1913, he studied under Yokoyama Sukesada. In 1918 he studied under Henmi Yoshitaka and even later under Enju Kunitoshi. Yoshimune became a Rikugun-Jumei-Tosho and won the 1941 Exhibition Special Honor Noted Seat. He is ranked at 2 million Yen in the Toko-taikan and considered one of the leading makers of his time. He passed away in 1946.

This blade is published in the book "Modern Japanese Swordsmiths, 1868 - 1945", by John Scott Slough on page 200 (see below). It also has a 76 point NTHK(NPO) Kantesho paper issued in 2018. The mei of this sword has the additional inscription of "Kasuga-Daimyojin Amaterasu-Daijungu Hachiman-Daibosatsu". These are the names of deities and the use here was to protect and empower the owner of the sword in WWII.

This sword is wide and the kasane is thick. The kissaki is slightly elongated and wide. The overall sugata is gracefull with koshi-sori but also strong and robust. There are some minor scratches and surface blemishes as shown in the photos. There are no kizu and the blade is very healthy. It comes with a shira-saya, silver habaki and a storage bag. As mentioned above, it was published in "Modern Japanese Swordsmiths" and has a NTHK(NPO) 76 point paper. A wonderful work by Takahashi Yoshimune and a fine representative example of a WWII gendaito.
