A Fine Calligraphy
by Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto

This is an outstanding calligraphy by the famous WWII Japanese Naval Admiral, Isoroku Yamamoto. The kanji on the work reads "shinseichimei". The meaning of this is "Pure Emotion and Clear Intelligence". This phrase has a deep message and is one that is universal in its sentiment. Yamamoto signed this work with his pen name, Choryou. This is the pen name that he used in the period from 1935 to 1943. Choryou was a literary name of his hometown, Nagaoka and this is why Yamamoto chose it. On the left of the signature, there are two stamps. The upper one reads : "Yamamoto Isoroku's stamp". The lower stamp reads: "Choryou". Yamamoto enjoyed calligraphy very much and was highly skilled with the brush. He was an accomplished man in so many ways in addition to being a Military genius. Yamamoto is most well known for planning and leading the attack at Pearl Harbor as well as commanding the Japanese fleet at the Battle of Midway. On the morning of April 18, 1943, P-38 Lightnings from the 339th Fighter Squadron ambushed Yamamoto's plane and escorts en route for an inspection tour. Yamamoto's plane was hit and went down killing all on board. The fascinating history of Yamamato's life is well covered in so many books. This is the kind of piece that is multi dimensional in terms of how it can be studied and thus, it is a unique and important item. Admiral Yamamto was known to have carried a katana by Amada Sadayoshi. Please read the article "Isoroku Yamamoto and the sword-smith Sadayoshi Amada " here. A general historic overview of the life of Isoroku Yamamoto can be found here.
