Tosa Myochin
Iron Sukashi Tsuba
Mid Edo Period

Dimensions: 71 mm x 69 mm
Thickness: 8 mm

A very nice example of Tosa Myochin work in excellent condition. This is a Higo design with paulownia blossoms and leaves. The sukashi work is skilfully done and the surface retains its original urushi lacquer. The ji has a nice pillowing of iron around the sukashi elements, giving the piece a wonderful feel. This tsuba was once part of a museum collection. It has a museum inventory number inside the nakago-ana. The Tosa Daimyo favored Akasaka and Higo designs and the workers there made tsuba to fit their lords taste. Many scholars have wrote that the best Tosa Myochin works are equal to contemporary works of Higo and Akasaka products. This can be clearly observed in the example at hand.
