About this sword :   This is a massive katana. It is over 31 inches long. The moto haba is 3.4 cm and the saki haba is 2.7 cm. A very powerful blade indeed. The o-kisskai gives it a fierce impression. Overall, it reminds us of the styles of Momoyama and Keisho period works. This blade has wonderful jigane and is very well made. Its common for extremely long swords to have some faults in the ji due to the large amount of material that has to be worked. However, this blade is an exception to that and has a very tight jigane. The horimono of a so no kuri kara on one side and a suken on the other is well done. There are some scratches on the ura monouchi of the blade. These are just on the surface. Please see the photos. There is a spot on the nakago where this blade once had a mei. You can see this in the photos on the omote nakago. Well made and large katana such as this one were often the target of adding famous names. Now the nakago is in an honorable sate and its past speaks volumes about the quality of the blade. The NTHK attributed this to the Shithara School circa Kyouhou (1716-1735). It also has a Sayagaki by Soukan giving the blade to Shitahara Terushige of the same nengo. This also comes with the habaki shown and a storage bag. This is a fantastic opportunity to add a huge katana to one's collection and it is of particular appeal to the Iai practitioner looking for a large blade to fit a tall framed person.
