About this sword :   This is an ubu wakizashi by Owari Kanetomo. He was active in mid Edo times around Koho (1716-1736). His work is rare and this ubu signed example is important for reference and research.

The sugata of this blade is kanmuri-otoshi zukuri. It resembles the sugata of naginata-naoshi but this is an ubu work. This blade reflects well the Mino style of Kanetomo's roots with a nioi-deki togari hamon, jizo boshi and takanoha yasuri. This blade is healthy, well made and is in full polish. There are no kizu.

This wakizashi is accompanied by a late Edo period koshirae. All of the tosugu are well made and in great condition. The ribbed brown and black urushi saya is well preserved and has its original kaeshizuno. The tsuba is a strong iron sukashi work with a shakudo mimi. The kozuka is of a tethered hawk in shakudo with details in gold wash. The meunki are of Noh masks in shakudo and silver. The fuchi kashira are shakudo with taka-bori in gold and silver details. The habaki is an old sliver foil example. The entire koshirae is well preserved and looks attractive on display.

This Kanetomo has an 1997 NTHK Kanteisho paper issued under Kentaro Yoshikawa. An ubu, zaimei, papered wakizashi in full polish with a koshirae and attractively priced.
