About this sword :

This is a nice chu-mon-uchi (special order) tanto by the Chikuzen Nobukuni school smith, Masatsune. He was active around Keio (1865-1868). It is a delight to study special order blades. This is because these are always Jishin saku ( a work made by the smith himself and with his best effort) and knowing the name of man that the blade was made for adds an additional element of appreciation. This blade was made for Kume Chikanori as stated on the ura of the nakago. The quality of the work is high. There are no kizu and the control of both the nioi-guchi and kitae is excellent. The old style of this blade is fully reminiscent of Yamashiro Koto and this was most likely an utsushi of a old blade. This is in full polish, healthy and has no kizu. Also, this blade is accompanied by a NTHK kanteisho paper.

This tanto also has its original Edo period aikuchi koshirae. It needs some restoration as shown in the photos. The kurikata is broken, menuki are missing and it needs tsuka-ito. The quailty of the urushi and details such as the inome sukashi are nicely done as are the horn fuchi kashira. This is a koshirae that has an aura of dignity and would be well worth restoring. The original copper habaki is present. There is a shira-saya for the blade and a tsunagi for the koshirae. Overall, this is an attractive special order tanto that is wonderfully representative of Nihonto at the end of the Edo period. As mentioned above, it comes with a NTHK paper, shira-saya and koshirae. The storage bags for both the shira-saya and the koshirae are also included. A lovely and complete package.
