Sugata:  This blade is ubu, wide, healthy and has a cutting edge of 29.76 inches. We can not say enough about how precious such a blade is. In the late 19th century, it was the style of the times to bring back the powerful sugata of warring blades from the Nanbokucho Jidai. This katana is such an example. It has a moto haba of 3.3 cm, saki haba of 2.2 cm and a 4 cm o-kisaki. This katana really conveys an awe inspiring feeling of strength and pride. This is the kind of sugata that most of us dream about.

Hamon :   Gunome choji midare in the Bizen style. The nioi guchi is deep and bright with many long ashi. The hamon is nioi deki and also ample ko nie is present. Overall the nioi guchi is remarkably vivid. There is a sugu yakidashi on both sides. Many togari can be seen and some of the gunome cluster in to florid choji formations.

Boshi :  Boshi is omaru with a long, pointed return

Kitae :  Very tight ko mokume hada in the muji style. There is misty ji nie and tobiyaki floats above the hamon in several areas. Midare utsuri is present in the monouchi. Muneyaki can also be seen along the back of the blade.

About this sword :   This is an outstanding flawless Katana by the Nidai Chounsai Tsunatoshi, which bears his early mei of Koretoshi. Chounsai Koretoshi was of the Kato Mon and made many swords jointly with his father, Kato Tsunatoshi, who passed away in 1863. This sword was made in the last year of his father's life and before Koretoshi changed his name to Tsunatoshi. The Kato Mon prospered greatly in the capital city of Edo. It is well known that many famous smiths came from this mon. These include smiths like Kato Tsunahide, Shodai and Nidai Tsunatoshi, Koyama Munetsugu, Ishido Korekazu, Takahashi Naganobu and Iwamoto Moritoshi. This sword is in the highly desirable Bizen stlye with a grand and powerful sugata. This is the type of workmanship that defines many of the best and most desirable works of Shinshinto times. This katana has a nagasa over 29 inches, wide mihaba and O kissaki. The blade was restored in Japan. The polish is perfect and top quality. The gold foil habbaki is original to the blade. It was restored in Japan as well. It received a Tokubetsu Hozon paper and has a sayagaki by Tanobe Michihiro. The comment section of the sayagaki states " This sword is dated Bunkyu 2nd, just before Koretoshi succeeded Tsunatoshi as Tsunatoshi the second. This sword has a very good, healthy ji and hada. It is an excellent piece showing the maker's characteristics". We can not say enough about the quality and health of this fine blade. It is being offered at low price and presents a rare and exciting opportunity.
