About this sword :   This is a tanto by Katsuyama Uenori. He was a retainer of the Katsuyama domain and worked in Mimasaka in Okayama, which is located in Bizen. There is not much known about this maker and this work is a rare example. The NBTHK Hozon paper does state "Shin Shinto" so his period of production is known. This would be the time between 1781-1876. The kesho yasuri is finished in a unique manner below the sabi-giwa and the blade is well made. It looks to be inspired by Soshu, showing the nie hataraki we all enjoy in such works.

The polish is old, but of quality. There are light surface scratches and some speckles of inactive rust inside the hi. There is a dark spot in the monouchi where rust was rubbed away. All of these are surface issues that can be ignored. There are no kizu. This blade is very thick. It is a yori-doshi or, "armor piercer". The kasane quite large and measures 11.5 mm.

The blade has an old shira-saya with horn koiguchi and a nice bag. It is acompined by an NBTHK Hozon paper. A nice tanto and rare example of Katsuyama Uenori.
