About this sword :   This is an ubu zaimei koto naginata by Kanabo Masasada. This blade is fully signed "Nanto Ju Kanabo Saemonnojo Masasada Saku". Note that the original nakago is fully intact and 53.8 cm long. It is very difficult to find koto (this blade was made around Tenbun 1532 1555) naginata that are signed and unaltered. For those who enjoy naginata and especially for people focusing their studies on pole arms, this blade presents a rare opportunity. Also, this exact blade was shown and discussed in Token to Rekishi (NTHK), No. 650, Heisei 14, 11. Please see the bottom of this page for the text and oshigata. A blade being published in this manner really ads a lot to the enjoyment and value of the piece. The Kanabo smiths are descended from the Yamato tradition and made weapons for the sohei. They are known for making robust and powerful battle-proof works. This blade has the classic naginata sugata of koto times exhibiting a more graceful profile than later blades. The horimono of bonji and a ken add even more martial aesthetic to this fine old soldier. Fully restored, new solid silver falling rain habaki and a nice shira-saya. Accompanied by a 2002 NTHK kantiesho paper. A wonderful example that will offer endless enjoyment to its new owner.
