Momonari Kabuto
Edo Period (17th Century)
with Mempo and Maedate

Japanese Samurai helmet constructed of four iron plates riveted together and lacquered a wonderful chocolate brown. It is fitted with it's original three lame matching brown lacquer shikoro. The Momonari shape (peach-shaped) is inspired by European helmets, specifically designed to deflect bullets. A very unusual feature found on higher quality helmets is the large eyebrow embossed across the mabizashi. The mempo is likely a Meiji period addition, but it was done in a similar matching brown lacquer. The inside of the mempo has red lacquer, wich was designed to make the wearer's appearance more frightening. The maedate is a hand-carved and lacquered wood demon with horns, whole likely new and complements the helmet nicely.
