About this sword :   This is a wonderfull Gendai by the well known smith Minamoto Yoshichika. Yoshichika's work has a high reputation in general and especially so for cutting ability. This sword was tested by Nakayama Hakudo of Ishikawa Prefecture and the nakago is stamped "Hakudo Tameshi-giri Sho" (Tested by Hakudo). Hakudo was considered the best swordsman of his time. Yoshichika made swords that were tested by Hakudo for use by the imperial guard. Please see the study of this blade, prepared for the Rochester Study Group, as well as the entry from John Slough's book shown below for more information. Also, please follow this link to Richard Stein's excellent web site for detailed information on Minamoto Yoshichika.
This blade has perfectly cut bo-hi that extend into the kissaki, in the manner of an old koto blade, and ends neatly below the habaki with a kaki-nagashi tip. This katana has great balance, is very healthy and is flawless. The polish is old and there are scratches and blemishes. It can be fully enjoyed as is but would also be an excellent candidate for fresh polish. This high grade Gendaito is accompanied by a fine quality shirasaya, sayagaki by the renowned polisher / Nihonto expert / author Kotoken Kajihara, storage bag, Kotoken Kajihara paper and a gold wash habaki.
