Hamon :  Ko-nie deki suguha. The nioi-guchi is thick and bright. There is kuchigaiba, inazuma and kinsugi mixed in.

Boshi :   Ko-maru.

Kitae:   Ko-itame hada. The forging pattern is admirably clear. Ji-nei and chikei are plentiful.

About this sword :   This is a naginata by the third generation Shitahara Yasushige. He was active around Manji(1658-1661) - Kanbun (1661-1673). His workmanship is different than the hadamono style of Koto Shitahara. He made tight and clear ko-itame with ko-nei deki suguha like this blade. He is a well regarded maker. Ranked Chu Jo Saku by Fujishiro and ranked Wazamono by the Yamada family for the cutting ability of his blades. This example is flawless and shows skill in its tempering and evenly dispersed ji hataraki. This naginata is in full polish and comes with a deluxe shira saya. Please note the horn fittings at the koiguchi and both ends of the tsuka. Finally, this is accompanied by an NBTHK Hozon paper and a older copper habaki. Being an ubu, zaimei blade in full polish, flawless and with a Hozon paper, this is an ideal naginata for study and appreciation.
