Hamon :   Nie deki suguha with ko gunome mixed in. The nioi guchi is bright. There are sunagashi, nijuba and bright strands inazuma. Ko ashi are also present.

Boshi :  O-maru with strong hakkake. The very long kaeri which reaches more than five inches back down the mune. Bight ko-nie is sprinkled throughout the boshi.

Kitae :  Tightly forged masame. The hada pattern is admirably clear and there is ji-nie near the boshi.

Aboout this sword :   A fine yoridoshi tanto by the 4th generation Tsuguhira. This is a revival piece made in the style of the Yamato Hosho School. The masame hada and abundance of hatraki, following the masame hada in the nioi guchi, reflect the spirit of old Hosho work admirably. This tanto has a powerful yoridoshi "armor piercing" sugata. It is 13mm thick at the mune-machi! The Tsuguhira line of swordsmiths were active in the Musahshi province. The Shodai was a student of the 3rd Yasutsgu and the line continued into Shin-shinto times. This tanto has particularly high empirical value because it is dated Meiwa 6 or 1769 on the ura of the nagako. The blade is flawless and the polish is in wonderful condition. The blade is accompanied by a unique and special koshirae. The mounts are a copy of a very old style that was used in early koto times and shows the strong influence of mainland China seen at that time.. The lacquer work on the says is outstanding. This is a style of urushi that is meant to look weathered. Wonderfully done and rarely seen today. The menuki and fuchi are done in gold foil. The saya has a oversize kogiri with a hole to suspend the koshirare, as does the tsuka. When mounted, the kogiria appears to be a small tsuba but this actualy aikuchi is style. Overall this tanto really has it all. It is signed , dated, papered has a nice koshirae, shira saya and a solid silver habbaki. Storage bags for the koshirae and the blade are also include. Attractively priced and easy to recommend.
