Hamon : Hiro sugua in nioi with very fine ko-nie mixed in. There are many ko ashi and the nioi guchi is luminous and bright.
Boshi : Omaru with a wide long return. The kaeri is sprinkled in fine nei.
Kitae : Very tight ko-mokume. The jigane is admirably uniform throughout the length of the blade and is very clear. There is a great deal of ji-nie distributed in the ji. The ji-nie is made up of fine grains of ko-nie. Chikei is also plentiful. Some of the chikei consist of long dancing strands.
About this sword : This a long and powerful wakizashi by the shodai Tsuguhira. Tsuguhira is a highly ranked smith and the craftsmanship shown in this blade clearly attests to that. He is ranked Jo saku by Fujishiro and Wazamono by the Yamada family for the sharpness of his blades. He was from the Echizen Yasutsugu school and active around 1673. This work shows the traits of the Yasutsugu tradition admirably as well as the sugata of the period. It is important to note that this blade received a highly desirable Tokubetsu Hozon paper from the NBTHK. In today's market it is very difficult to find good Tokubetsu Hozon, Josaku level work being offered for sale. It is accompanied by a solid silver habaki, fine shira saya , storage bag and the Tokubestsu Hozon paper mentioned above. The restoration was all professionally done in Japan. The polish is perfect and top level quality. The blade is flawless and very healthy. This fine blade presents an exciting opportunity and we are delighted to recommend it.
