About this sword :  This is a great opportunity to study a Sa school blade. Of couse, works by the Sa school are very hard to find and are highly sought after. This example has a kin zogan mei of "Sa". It passed shinsa and a Hozon paper was given as "Sue Sa" in 1986. The term of "Sue Sa" indicates the pupils of the mater, working in the later Nanbokucho period. It should be noted that 1986 was early in the new Hozon system. It is often said among collectors that NBTHK papers from this time are somewhat conservative. This blade has dark areas in the ji as shown in the photos. This is cased by the core steel beginning to show after many polishes over the last 650 years. The blade is priced to reflect this. It should be noted that this is not an issue for the study and enjoyment of the blade. One could spend many times the asking price and not being to approach the quality of this sword. It is in nice old polish with a gold foil habaki and an old shira saya. The shirasaya is beat up but still serviceable. It is also accompanied by the 1986 NBTHK paper, as mentioned above, and a storage bag. Overall, a wonderful sword for the serious sword student that wants to study high end koto workmanship with out having to spend a fortune.
