About this sword :   This is a fine Soshu school shin-shinto wakizashi by the 14th generation Tsunahiro. He was active from Keio thorough Meiji times and passed away in December of 1912. His personal name was Yamamura Shigenojo. He singed his works as the 20th generation descendant of Masamune as shown on this example. The NBTHK Hozon paper for this blade includes the additional information of "年代慶应頃". Literally, this means "year, generation, Keio, circa". This places the work as an early example by this smith, made right before the Meiji Revolution. This blade has charming hori-mono of a ken with sankozuka on the omote and bonji with rendai(lotus flower)on the ura. The kasane of this blade is very wide at 10mm. The mihaba is also large at 3.4cm. This conveys a powerful feeling in one's hand. This blade was meant to pierce heavy iron armor. There are no kizu and the blade is healthy. It is in old polish with some minor surface blemishes and scratches as shown in the photos. This style of large hira zukuri blade is also referred to as a sunnobi tanto.

This wakizashi is accompanied by a gold foil habaki, old shira-saya and a storage bag. There are two papers for the blade. One is a 2003 NBTHK Hozon paper and the other is a paper issued by the Tokyo Art Club in Showa 40, 1965.

This is a wonderfully representative work of both the Tsunahiro line and of the armor piercing style of blade that was being made around Bakamatsu times for the serious task of war. An ubu, papered, signed, healthy blade by a descendant of Masamune in nice old polish.
