Kitae :   Ko-itame hada mixed with areas of o-hada. Ji-nie is made of ko-nie and covers the ji like a mist.

About this sword :   This is a long shin-shinto katana by Ozaki Masataka. He was the grandson of Ozaki Suketaka and the son of Takashige. He worked in Osaka and later moved to Kyoto where he supported the court noble Chigusa Arikoto.

This blade has a long nagasa of 70 cm with a wide mihaba. The blade is heavy and has powerful sugata. The nakago is ubu and it has a wonderful mei stating Masataka's age of 68 years old when he made this sword in 1869. Nakago that contain this level of information are the corner stone of study for a given smith. This blade is in polish. There are small surface scratches on the ji and shinogi-ji. There are some kitae-ware as shown in the photos. The empirical value of this katana is high and it received a Tokubetsu Hozon paper from the NBTHK. This comes with an solid silver habaki, a shira-saya and a storage bag. A rare opportunity to own a long, signed and dated katana with the makers age at the time of forging recorded on the nakago.
