Hamon :   Ko nie deki suguha. The nioi guchi is both tight and bright. Hataraki includes kuchigaiba, ko nioi ashi, nie sake, sunagashi and fine inazuma.

Kitae :   Tight ko-itame becoming masame in the ha. The jigane is finely forged in the zanguri style of the Horikawa school. Ji nie, consisting of ko-nie, is present as well as chikei. There are several pools of nioi, becoming tobiyaki, floating in the shinogi-ji. The shinogi-ji hada is strongly masame.

Boshi :  Ko maru with an elegant kaeri. The boshi nioi guchi is bright and evenly tempered in ko nie.

About this sword :   Kunitsugu was a student of Dewa no Daijo Kunimichi . In fact, some books record him as the son of Kunimichi. There are several daisaku works bearing both their mei. This katana is in fantastic condition and is very healthy. Even the niku of the boshi is well intact. The quality of the workmanship is admirably high and it has an ubu nakago. This fine blade was awarded Tokubetsu Hozon papers by the NBTHK, which attests to its high quality and the authenticity of the work.

The inscription of the blade, recording that this katana was made with Nambantetsu, is precious. Nambantetsu (Foreign steel introduced to Japan by the Dutch) was a very rare material in early Edo times. It is said that only the best smiths could be provide with this expensive material by their lord. It was highly valued for its functional properties as well as exotic and exclusive nature. Please click here to read recent and facinating research concerning Nambantetsu "The NAMBAN TETSU Project" published by Tokensugita.com. Also, please see my other items for sale to view a Naginata made by this same smith.

The blade was just polished by Bob Benson. The quality of polish is extremely important to our appreciation and this blade is outstanding in that regard. The Jigane and hataraki are extremely clear, ha niku correctly shaped and the geometry of the blade is well ordered. It is accompanied by a charming old shirasaya and antique gold wash habbaki and a NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper. This is a truly wonderful work by Kunitsugu. Considering its quality, condition, length, level of paper and ubu zaimei nakago it is an absolute joy to recommend.
