About this sword :   Kazusa no suke Kaneshige is a famous smith of the Edo period. He is ranked at 5 millon Yen in the Toko Taikan, Jo Saku by Fujishiro and Ryowazamono by the Yamada family. The study value of this blade is of particularly high interest due to Kazusa no Suke Kaneshige's connection to Nagosone Kotetsu, one of the most famous smiths of all time. The Nihonto Koza, translated by Harry Watson, states that Kotetsu's teacher was Kazusa no Suke Kaneshige. Nagayama also explains that Kotetsu studied with Kazusa no Suke Kaneshige. The uniform gunome that can be seen in this sword is very similar to the trade mark "juzuba" style of Kotetsu. This sword is suriage but part of the original mei remains intact. This sword received a Tokubetsu Kicho paper from the NBTHK in 1971. The polish of the blade has been touched up State side. One can see the jigane and the hataraki clearly. There is a slight dip in the ha. Please see the photo with the arrow.

This blade comes with a Edo period koshirae. The tsuba and kojiri are matching. They feature takabori of dragons in gold and silver. The wide mimi of the tsuba is made of solid silver and the habaki is done in silver foil. The kozuka is kinko with shi shi dogs and the blade has the mei of Kazusa no suke Kaneshige. The lacquer work of the saya shows some old repairs but is in good order. The menuki are of dragons and the fuchi kashira are shakudo with a katakiribori floral motif. There is a nice saego and a bag which includes a charming old Japanese wooden label with the calligraphy of "Kaneshige" written on it.

This is a well made Jo Saku sword that comes with a Edo period koshirae. As a papered suirage sword by Kazusa no suke Kaneshige it offers a great study opportunity at much lower price than the market value of a ubu blade. Priced for a quick sale by the owner.
