Hamon :   Nioi-deki Sanbonsuji with nie. There are many sunagashi. Some are made of bright nie and others are soft and subtle. Ashi can be seen in the valleys of the hamon.

Boshi :   Midare komi with medium kaeri.

Kitae :   Itame hada with some mokume mixed in. Shirake utsuri makes the ji look white. There are ji-nie and chikei.

About this sword :   This is a wakizashi by Mino Kanemoto. This is a signed and ubu example that has been attributed by Yoshikawa Kentaro as a work by Kanemoto of the Tensho jidai (1573-1592). The Meikan lists four Kanemoto working in Mino at that time. This blade is by one of those four smiths.

This blade is a healthy example. The kasane is 7mm and its motohaba is 3.1cm. This blade has no kizu and is well made. The nioi-guchi shows good control. It is consistent in width and luminosity throughout the length of the blade. The hada shows the same consistency in the folding pattern and hataraki distribution. There are three small areas of old rust corrosion on the ura along the mune(see photos).

This blade was once in rusted condition and was submitted to the NTHK in that state to verify the mei in 1989. It passed with a shinteisho result and the rusted condition was noted on the work sheet(see photo below). In its current state, this Kanemoto easily meets the published criteria for higher papers.

This work shows classic workmanship for the Kanemoto group. Appreciation of its nioi deki sanbonsuji hamon, Seki style forging and takanoha yasuri make this a great teaching blade for Sue-Mino. This is accompanied by an old gold foil moss design habaki and a shira-saya with saya-gaki. A nice, papered, signed Kanemoto in ubu condtion in full poilish and no kizu.
