About this sword :  This is well made wakizashi by Hizen Kunisada. Works by this maker are very rare. He is an unlisted smith and this could be the only known work by him. This received a NTHK paper issued under Yoshikawa Kentaro in 1984. So the authenticity of the signature can be relayed upon without question. This blade has many Hizen kantei points. Theses include : nie deki suguha hamon, ko mokume hada covered in ji nie, Hizen style boshi and katesagari yasuri. There are some minor ware on the omote shinogi-ji.

This wakizashi is accompanied by an Edo period koshirae, The attractive tsuka with black lacquered leather ito was restored in recent times. There are nicely made shakudo fuchi kashira with detailed takabori of crashing waves. Inlaid gold dots create the spray of the water. The menuki are copper dragons. This tusba is an old katchushi work that easily dates to the early Edo period but is more likely Momoyama in origin. The saya has several repairs and is somewhat beat up. With the exception of the repaired areas, this saya retains its original Edo period deep black urushi lacquer.

This sword is a solid example of Hizen workmanship. It is ubu and signed with a Yoshikawa Kentaro NTHK paper and an antique koshirae at an attractive price.
